Western Governors University (WGU) EDUC 5066 D186 Learning as a Science Practice Test

Asking students to expand their answers emphasizes elaboration of thinking, which is a key growth-mindset practice. When students are prompted to expand, they must articulate the reasoning behind their initial response, provide evidence or examples, and connect ideas more fully. This makes their thinking visible, helps them understand how to develop more accurate or nuanced explanations with effort, and reinforces that learning grows with practice.

The other approaches don’t cultivate that same process. Hiding mistakes to protect self-esteem avoids working through misunderstandings and misses chances to improve thinking. Relying only on direct instruction doesn’t push students to articulate or refine their reasoning. Limiting journaling about goals focuses on self-reflection in a narrow way and doesn’t require expanding current answers or reasoning in the moment.
